Following Wes Streeting’s resignation as health minister due to his lack of faith in Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership, Andy Burnham will try to rejoin the Commons as an MP. Following Labour MP Josh Simons’ announcement that he would step down to make room for him, Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, declared he will seek to run for Labour in Makerfield.
In order to challenge Sir Keir for the Labour leadership, a candidate must be an MP. Streeting did not declare he would run for president, but he did call for a wide discussion about the future. Following a dismal series of election results for Labour last week, there has been much conjecture regarding Sir Keir’s future as leader. There hasn’t been a challenge to leadership.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who is also viewed as a possible rival to Sir Keir, announced earlier on Thursday that she had settled her tax issues with HMRC.
Burnham declared he would seek public support to return to Parliament in order to “bring the change we have brought to Greater Manchester to the whole of the UK and make politics work properly for people.” Simons said he thought Burnham could “drive the change our country is crying out for.
