On September 1st, Tim Cook, 65, will relinquish his position as CEO to John Ternus, Apple’s head of hardware engineering, while continuing to serve as executive chairman of the Cupertino, California-based corporation. That is comparable to the changes made by Jeff Bezos of Amazon and Reed Hastings of Netflix following the conclusion of their incredibly prosperous CEO careers. Arthur Levinson will step down as Apple’s non-executive chairman while continuing to serve on the board of directors to make room for Cook to assume his new position.
Cook said in a statement, “Being the CEO of Apple and being trusted to lead such an extraordinary company has been the greatest privilege of my life.” I genuinely adore Apple, and I am incredibly appreciative of the chance to collaborate with a group of such brilliant, inventive, imaginative, and incredibly compassionate individuals.”
Ternus, 50, has worked for Apple for 25 years. For the last five of those years, he has been in charge of the engineering behind the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, which made him a strong contender to succeed Cook. When Apple releases its financial results for the first three months of the year on April 30, Cook and Ternus might have more to say about the leadership change.
