In response to a leaked document that purportedly stated the role will remain a guy, former 007 actor Pierce Brosnan has voiced his opinion that the renowned spy in the upcoming James Bond film must be British.
The 71-year-old Irish celebrity, who played the part from 1995 to 2002, denied rumors that an American would be chosen for the position, saying it was “given” that the quick-witted, martini-drinking, world-saving agent would be British.
Additionally, he defended the recent acquisition of the property by Amazon-MGM, describing it as the “right decision. “They have to have a lot of guts to let go,” he told the Sunday Telegraph. “I hope [Amazon] treats the character and the work with respect, dignity, and inventiveness.
Longtime 007 producers and guardians Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are stepping back in an agreement announced last month, establishing a new joint venture with Amazon MGM Studios to oversee the intellectual property rights for James Bond.
Amazon MGM will now make the creative decisions, while Wilson and Broccoli will still be co-owners. Since their initial collaboration as co-producers on Brosnan’s Golden Eye (1995), the pair has directed all subsequent installments, including Daniel Craig’s role as 007 in the series.
