Marathon talks that failed to generate a breakthrough between the United States and Iran were not the end of negotiations, officials in the US and the region said Monday. According to those acquainted with the situation, President Donald Trump is willing to resume in-person conversations as soon as he believes Tehran is ready to meet his demands.
Trump officials are internally discussing details for a potential second, in-person meeting with Iranian officials before the ceasefire expires on April 21, according to a source familiar with the talks, though it is unclear whether such a meeting will take place. Officials are looking at potential dates and locations if ongoing talks with Iran and regional mediators progress in the coming days, the source said, describing the discussions as preliminary. “We need to be prepared to stand something up quickly should things head in that direction,” the insider stated.
However, given Iran’s previous resistance to a number of US requests, it is unlikely that Tehran will accept Trump’s criteria anytime soon, even as the US initiated a blockade of Iranian ports on Monday morning. Both parties have proposed a suspension of Iranian uranium enrichment, but officials say they have yet to agree on a mutually acceptable timeframe for the moratorium.
