President Donald Trump showed no signs of being concerned about the political fallout from the $20 billion economic lifeline he is providing to Argentina during a US government shutdown on Tuesday.
Instead, Trump stated unequivocally during a lunch with his Argentine counterpart, Javier Milei, that the purpose of the US cash infusion was to support a key ideological partner who is facing political consequences. He also made it clear that Milei’s continued rule is a must for US economic assistance.
Perhaps no global leader has more embraced Trump and his slash-and-burn style than Milei, who has established himself as a mainstay in the global conservative movement thanks to his mop of dark hair, black leather jacket, former role as frontman of a Rolling Stones tribute band, and pack of English mastiffs that he claims give him political advice.
On the international scene, it was a clear instance of Trump honoring a comrade. Milei was elected on a platform of cutting through Argentina’s overburdened bureaucracy and purging “woke leftists” from the government. Following the American election in November of last year, he became the first international leader to pay Trump a visit at Mar-a-Lago. Only two international leaders attended Trump’s inauguration, including him.
