Near Venezuela, a JetBlue Flight Avoids a Midair Collision With a US Air Force Aircraft

On Friday, a JetBlue flight from the tiny Caribbean nation of Curaçao stopped its climb to avoid running with a US Air Force refueling tanker. The pilot claimed that the military aircraft had crossed his route.

A tape of the JetBlue pilot’s contact with air traffic control shows him saying, “We almost had a midair collision here.” “They went right through our flight path. It’s absurd that they don’t have their transponder on.

JetBlue Flight 1112 was traveling from Curaçao, which is located close off the coast of Venezuela, to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City when the event occurred. It coincides with the US military’s increased efforts to combat drug trafficking in the Caribbean and to put further pressure on Venezuela’s leadership. It has been outrageous with the unidentified aircraft within our air,” the controller said in response to the pilot, according to the air traffic tape.

We have reported the event to federal authorities and will participate in any investigation,” JetBlue spokesperson Derek Dombrowski stated on Sunday. “Our crew members are trained on proper procedures for various flight situations, and we commend our crew for quickly conveying this situation to our senior team,” he continued.
