Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated on Tuesday that Russia will not accept any “compromise” pertaining to the occupied lands of Ukraine. According to Ryabkov, Moscow wants to maintain authority over five Ukrainian regions: Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. It has not reduced its demands.
Russia does not have complete control over any of the other three regions of Ukraine, with the exception of occupied Crimea and nearly all of the Luhansk region. Additionally, Moscow forces do not hold the regional capitals of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. The Kremlin now seeks security assurances for Moscow, just as the European leaders promised to defend Ukraine against Russia in the future, including by military means.
Additionally, Peskov made up the story that Russia’s war against Ukraine was “triggered” by a NATO official who “arrived to Ukraine and infiltrated Ukrainian government.” Representatives from NATO are not affiliated with Ukrainian organizations or the Ukrainian government.
Additionally, neither prior to nor after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022 has the alliance soldiers been there. On Monday in Berlin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed that Russia halt its attacks during the holidays, which might finally result in the start of talks for a real truce.
