According to The Administration, Danish Soldiers Would Retaliate if They Were Invaded

According to a 1952 military instruction that Denmark’s Defense Ministry has confirmed is still in effect, soldiers must engage without waiting for orders if anyone were to invade Danish territory, even US troops seeking to conquer Greenland.

The Defence Command and Ministry told the Danish newspaper Berlingske that the standing order mandates that Danish military forces “immediately take up the fight” against any attack on Danish soil without waiting for orders, even if commanders are not aware of a declaration of war.

Following US President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to seize Greenland by force if necessary and his description of the Arctic territory as essential to US national security, the directive has received attention.

Frederiksen told Danish channel TV2 on Monday that “everything stops if the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily.” That is, the security that has been offered since the end of World War II, including our NATO.

Attacking forces are required by the 1952 command to react immediately or request authorization. Berlingske was informed by the Defense Ministry that the directive “remains in force,” according to Danish and Greenlandic media.
