As Trump Intensifies His Attempt to Seize Greenland, Who can Protect NATO From Him?

President Donald Trump has pushed NATO toward what many fear could be its most serious crisis yet, after threatening new tariffs on US allies that oppose his bid to take control of Greenland against the wishes of its people.

The impact on global stability will largely depend on two things. First, whether Republicans in Congress are willing to take the unusual step of standing up to a president from their own party. Second, whether European leaders, who have so far responded with clear unity, decide to impose real consequences on Washington.

The European Union holds significant economic leverage as one of the world’s largest trade blocs. Any retaliation could hurt US markets, which Trump often points to as a measure of national success. At the same time, trade penalties or reduced military cooperation could also carry risks for Europe, potentially harming allies as much as the United States.

EU ambassadors held emergency talks in Brussels on Sunday, while several NATO leaders known to have friendly relations with Trump called to reaffirm their stance on Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of Denmark. The consultations reflect growing concern on both sides of the Atlantic that the alliance itself could be at risk.
