Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos remains dedicated to the publication, its top editor told CNN in an interview Wednesday, hours after the Post let off hundreds of staffers. Executive editor Matt Murray stated, “He wants the Post to be a bigger, relevant, thriving institution.”
Many Post journalists question that, however, contending that the institution can’t slash its way to development. Roughly one in three employees were laid off on Wednesday, including more than 300 in the newsroom, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
The dramatic cutbacks further exacerbated criticism of Bezos, leaving many Post journalists wondering whether he’ll sell the publication, and leading some to hope that he will. Bezos hasn’t made any comments about his present plans for the Post, but he has quietly urged management to stop the publication’s yearly losses, turn a profit, and find a long-term solution.
In a phone interview, Murray was reticent to describe his conversations with Bezos in length and declined to indicate when he last spoke with the owner. But he termed Wednesday a “reset” day and claimed Bezos favours “reinvention.
