The Chief Executive of The Washington Post Resigns Following Widespread Layoffs

Days after presiding over widespread layoffs, the Washington Post announced that its chief executive is leaving the position. In a statement to employees, William Lewis stated that “difficult decisions” had been made to secure the paper’s future and that it was time to depart.

The daily drastically reduced its coverage of international news and sports on Wednesday, announcing that it was laying off a third of its staff. Jeff Bezos, the wealthy owner of the Post, came under fire for the move, which was denounced by numerous journalists. Matt Murray, the executive editor, claimed that “stability” will result from the changes. The Post announced Lewis’s retirement and said Jeff D’Onofrio, who became the newspaper’s chief financial officer last year, will take over as interim publisher and CEO.

Lewis, a former Wall Street Journal publisher and CEO of Dow Jones, was hired for the position at the Washington Post in 2023. Employees and subscribers have criticised him for his attempts to recover daily cash losses.

Following the widespread layoffs, which affected the whole staff of the newspaper in the Middle East as well as its reporter in Kyiv, Ukraine, hundreds of people demonstrated in front of the newspaper’s offices in Washington, DC, on Thursday.
