The War that Trump Initiated With Iran May Not be Resolved by Him, Even if He Desired To

A war that has been “won” but has not yet been “completed.” An “excursion” that necessitates Iran’s “unconditional surrender.” President Donald Trump’s rhetorical knots align with his approach to directing the United States’ information intake; however, they prove ineffective when confronted with the harsh realities of conflict.

The concept of “victory” in war differs from that of sports in that it is not determined by a tally after a predetermined period. The extraordinary seriousness of an intractable moment is belied by the bravado and gamer-style videos of the US government as it pursues its assault on Iran. The question is, how far do the Americans have to go to not only declare “we won,” as Trump did in Kentucky on Wednesday, but to make Iran behave as if it has lost?

Trump is currently ensnared in the most ancient pitfall of contemporary warfare: the assumption that a rapid, surgical military operation will produce lasting political outcomes. The Soviets implemented this strategy in Afghanistan; the United States implemented it in Iraq in 2003; and Putin is currently engaged in a conflict in Ukraine. The individuals it is attacking are more dedicated to defending their lands and residences, regardless of the force it uses at the outset, whether it succeeds or not.
