During a Second Journey to Pakistan, the Iranian Foreign Minister will Travel to Moscow to Meet With Putin

Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi returned to Pakistan on Sunday, a day after departing the nation as US President Donald Trump cancelled a scheduled visit to Islamabad by US negotiators. He left Pakistan on Sunday night and traveled to Moscow to see Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

Iran’s ISNA news agency said that Tehran has sent “written messages” to the US through Pakistani mediators, addressing “some of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s red lines, including nuclear issues and the Strait of Hormuz.” The texts were not part of any talks, the agency stated. According to Iranian media, Araghchi’s second visit to Pakistan aimed to communicate “Iran’s positions and views on the framework of any understanding to completely end the war”.

During his initial visit to Islamabad on Friday and Saturday, he met with Pakistan’s military chief Asim Munir, a key mediator, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Other Iranian envoys returned to Tehran to “consult and obtain the necessary instructions on issues related to the end of the war,” according to ISNA. Araghchi described his trip to Pakistan on Saturday as “very fruitful,” but expressed doubts about Washington’s intentions, adding that he had yet to see “if the US is truly serious about diplomacy.
