Iran Could not Attack London, According to a UK Minister

According to a UK cabinet minister, there is “no assessment to substantiate” Israel’s assertion that Iran possesses long-range missiles that can reach London. Steve Reed, the housing secretary, told the BBC that there was “no specific assessment that the Iranians are targeting the UK – or even could if they wanted to” following the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) announcement on Saturday that Tehran possessed weapons with a range of up to 4,000 kilometers (2,485 miles).

The joint US-UK military installation on the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, which is around 3,800 kilometers from Iran, was reportedly threatened by Iran. Reed claimed he was unable to provide “operational details,” thus he declined to disclose the rockets’ proximity to British land.

Overnight into Friday, Iran fired two ballistic missiles toward Diego Garcia, one of which failed and fell short while the other was intercepted. The IDF stated on Saturday that it had disclosed last year that Tehran had planned to create missiles that could reach Europe, Asia, and Africa after learning of the attempted strike.

Reed maintained that there was “no specific assessment that the Iranians are targeting the UK or even could, if they wanted to” when asked if this was accurate. He told Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday, “We are fully capable of safeguarding this nation and keeping it safe, whether it’s here at home or whether it’s our assets and citizens throughout the region.
