This bustling recycling plant is difficult to work in because of the constant noise from hoppers and conveyor belts, as well as the widespread dust. The family-run skip and garbage disposal company Sharp Group owns the facility in Rainham, east London.
Everything you can think of, including chunks of concrete, obsolete VHS cassettes, and shoes, travels along the conveyor belts. This team uses 24 agency workers on its fast conveyor belts to process up to 280,000 tonnes of mixed recycling annually.
This is a dangerous industry. Despite Sharp Group’s pride in its safety record, the industry has 45% more work-related illnesses and injuries than other industries. Additionally, the death rate is significantly higher than the national average.
These elements, in addition to the unpleasant nature of the task, make it challenging to retain employees. The annual personnel turnover rate is 40%.You are always plucking, and the belt is always moving. According to line supervisor Ken Dordoy, “I go through a lot of pickers because they just aren’t up to the job.” Every 20 minutes, the company rotates pickers through various materials, and I saw the belt occasionally halt for rest.
