Trump Claims that Following a Gunfight in the Strait of Hormuz, the US-Iran Ceasefire is still in Effect

Despite a confrontation between Iran and US naval warships in the Strait of Hormuz, for which both sides accused the other, US President Donald Trump claims that a ceasefire is still in effect with Iran.

The US claimed that Iran launched a “unprovoked attack” against three of its warships using missiles, drones, and small boats. Iran “trifled with us today” according to Trump. Meanwhile, Iran’s highest military command said that the United States had launched “aerial attacks” on various coastal locations and targeted an Iranian oil tanker and another ship nearing the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalation occurs one day after Iran’s foreign ministry declared that it was taking into account a proposal to stop the war from the United States. The United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Defense announced early on Friday that its air defenses were “actively engaging” with an Iranian missile and drone attack, which is another indication of the ceasefire’s fragility.

At first, “explosions” in the Strait of Hormuz were described as a “exchange of fire” with the “enemy” by Iranian state media. Local media, meanwhile, reported hearing explosions in Tehran. Shortly after, US “aerial attacks” were reported to have hit the beaches of Bandar Khamir, Sirik, and Qeshm Island, according to a statement from Iran’s highest military command.
