China and India’s World Cup Viewers are Uncertain About the Broadcast

Because broadcasters have not yet reached agreements with football’s governing body, Fifa, millions of football fans in China and India are unsure if the World Cup will be televised in their nations.

With only a few weeks until the event is scheduled to begin, it is uncommon for TV rights agreements to not be reached for an event of this magnitude. Usually, these agreements are finalized months or even years before to the opening ceremony.

According to local media in both nations, Fifa and broadcasters are still at odds over how much it will cost to broadcast the games. Fifa stated to the BBC that negotiations in China and India “are ongoing and must remain confidential at this stage” but did not address the associated costs.

According to the international football organization, 180 territories have now finalized agreements with Fifa. However, a few countries, such as China and India, who together make up around one-third of the world’s population, have yet to obtain the rights to broadcast the 2026 World Cup.

According to reports, Fifa first offered state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) up to $300 million (£220 million) for the tournament rights. According to Beijing Daily, a state-run publication, Fifa has now reduced the price to between $120 million and $150 million. However, according to the article, that is still more than twice CCTV’s budget for the event.
