Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, boarded Air Force One during a layover in Alaska, demonstrating Trump’s emphasis on business. Elon Musk of Tesla also traveled to China on the presidential aircraft.
After leaving Washington, Trump posted on social media, saying, “I will be asking President Xi, a Leader of extraordinary distinction, to ‘open up’ China so that these brilliant people can work their magic and help bring the People’s Republic to an even higher level.”
The visit, which is the first by a US president to China in almost ten years, will also bring a number of other prominent CEOs to Beijing, including Tim Cook of Apple. The highly anticipated talks with Xi on Thursday and Friday are part of this week’s trip, which is Trump’s first visit to Beijing since 2017.
A tea reception and a state banquet in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People are part of the jam-packed schedule. In contrast to the US’s long-standing assertion that it will not consult Beijing on its support for Taiwan, the self-governing democracy that China claims, Trump announced on Monday that he would talk to Xi about US arms shipments to Taiwan.
The leaders of the two largest economies in the world are expected to discuss a number of issues, including China’s restrictions on rare earth exports, the AI rivalry, and their tumultuous trade relationship.
