A Multibillionaire Co-Owner of Manchester United Incites Anger by Asserting That the UK Was Colonised by Immigrants

When Jim Ratcliffe, the wealthy co-owner of Manchester United, said that immigrants had colonized the United Kingdom, the club’s supporters denounced his words as harmful and polarising, and the prime minister demanded an apology.

Ratcliffe, one of the wealthiest men in Britain and the founder of the petrochemical business Ineos, issued an apology in a statement on Thursday for his “choice of language,” but only after a furor that attracted both football fans and high-ranking politicians.

The (British) economy isn’t in a good place, Ratcliffe said on Wednesday in an interview with Sky News. “You can’t have a large number of immigrants and nine million people on welfare in the same economy. The United Kingdom has been colonised, after all. The expense is excessive. Indeed, immigrants have colonised the United Kingdom.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was among the many people who criticised Ratcliffe’s comments and demanded an apology. According to Starmer, “Britain is a proud, tolerant, and diverse country,” and Ratcliffe’s remarks were “offensive and wrong.

Manchester United said in a statement on Thursday that it “reflects the unity and resilience of all the communities we are so privileged to represent” and that it “prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming club.
