According to the chairman of the airline, one of the engines of the Air India aircraft that crashed last week was brand-new, while the other wasn’t scheduled for maintenance until December. N Chandrasekaran claimed that the aircraft’s two engines had “clean” histories in an interview with an Indian news station.
“In March 2025, a new engine was installed. He informed the Times Now station that the left engine’s next maintenance check is scheduled for December 2025, having previously been serviced in 2023. AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner headed for London, crashed less than a minute after taking off from Ahmedabad airport in western India last Thursday, killing at least 270 persons, the most of whom were passengers.
In order to reconstruct the last minutes of the flight and identify the cause of the disaster, investigators are currently sorting through debris and decoding recorded flight data and cockpit audio from the aircraft’s recovered black boxes.
“There are several theories and conjectures. However, as far as I’m aware, this exact aircraft, this particular tail, AI171, has a spotless record,” Mr. Chandrasekaran stated, advising against making snap judgements. Every expert tells me that the black box and recorders will undoubtedly reveal the narrative. We just must wait for that,” he continued.
