Arriving at the Benghazi airport on Tuesday, Magnus Brunner, the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, was deemed “persona non grata” and requested to leave Libyan territory.
The globally renowned Government of National Unity (GNU) competitor, the Government of National Stability (GNS), issued the directive. Even though Khalifa Haftar’s military dictatorship really holds the reins of power, the GNS is in charge of Benghazi and Eastern Libya. Tripoli and the West are under GNU authority. Matteo Piantedosi, Italy’s interior minister, and a group of Maltese and Greek officials were also immediately expelled.
The GNS condemned “actions that demonstrably disregard Libyan national sovereignty,” “flagrant contravention of established diplomatic norms and international convention,” and “violation of Libyan domestic law,” without giving specifics, in a press release signed by Prime Minister Osama Saad Hammad.
“Consequently, their planned trip was rescinded upon their arrival at Benina International Airport in the city of Benghazi,” according to the announcement. They were deemed persona non grata after being properly advised of the necessity of leaving Libyan territory immediately.
