In response to Donald Trump’s tariff threats, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that his American counterpart was elected as the US president and “not to be the emperor of the world. According to a message published on his social media site, Truth Social, this week, Trump threatened to impose devastating tariffs of 50% on Brazil beginning August 1.

In the letter, Trump connected the exorbitant tariff threat to what he called a “witch hunt” trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who leans right. Close Trump friend Bolsonaro is on trial in Brazil for allegedly trying to topple Lula after he won the presidency in 2022. If convicted of masterminding the coup, he may spend more than 40 years in prison.

Da Silva, often known as Lula, said that Trump’s threats had deviated from “protocol” in an exclusive interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Thursday. He also maintained that the destiny of his predecessor could not be discussed in trade talks.

In Brazil, the judiciary is a separate arm of government. He said that Bolsonaro “is not being judged personally” and that the president of the Republic “has no influence whatsoever.” His attempts to plan a coup d’état are being used to evaluate him.
