Parts of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna were placed on alert due to torrential rain, which is predicted to continue through Friday afternoon. The president of Tuscany urged citizens to show “the utmost attention and caution” and stated that local rescue and medical services were on high alert.

Ahead of the heavy nighttime rain, some inhabitants of Bologna were evacuated on Thursday evening due to reports of mudslides and landslides. According to the city, the worst of the floods had subsided by Friday morning, and no injuries have been reported as of yet.

Local media said that a family of four was saved Thursday night from a landslide in Badia Prataglia, Tuscany. Following the Rimaggio’s flooding and flow into the Sesto Fiorentino neighborhood in Florence’s northern suburbs, the National Fire Department reported receiving dozens of calls. Local authorities in Pisa warned that the Arno River has surpassed the first flood-risk level, prompting the construction of flood defenses along the river.

Flooding and fallen trees also affected roads, and after the A1 motorway was partially stopped, residents of Florence were warned not to go at all. According to local media, schools and numerous University of Florence campuses were closed in over 60 communities in Tuscany. Throughout the day, the red weather alerts which indicate a serious chance of severe and widespread flooding—are expected to remain in effect.
