According to many people with knowledge of the situation, the three Polish members of the European Parliament’s Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) group are now at conflict with other group members over their views on Russia.
The sources claim that Polish MEPs Marcin Sypniewski, Stanisław Tyszka, and Ewa Zajączkowska-Hernik, who were elected on the “Confederation” list, are dissatisfied with the actions of certain members of the group and the overall attitude of their fellow MEPs towards Russia. According to the sources, one exacerbating reason was the presence of representatives from the Bulgarian party Revival, including MEP Stanislav Stoyanov, during the Victory Day march in Moscow on May 9.
But this isn’t the only thing that makes the Polish MEPs unhappy. The partnership with the far-right German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has also caused some anxiety. MEP Peter Bystron is being investigated for allegedly taking payments to favour Russian interests, and AfD members are already perceived as being sympathetic to those interests.
Given the strong anti-German feeling among right-wing Polish voters, Confederation MEPs in Poland are facing criticism for being affiliated with the nationalist German party.
