Berlin, shock and humiliation! The Bundestag only chose Friedrich Merz as the next German Chancellor in the second round of voting. The Federal Republic’s history has never seen something like this. Before he can start the presentation, has he already destroyed the goods? Will his alliance still be able to cooperate in a trustworthy manner? And what about his big European plans?
The European Parliament’s Damian Boeselager, who is seated with the Greens, Anna Stürgkh, who is with Renew Europe (Austria), and Siegfried Mureșan, who is with the European People’s Party (Romania), are the questions for our panel in this episode.
Merz has faced constant criticism from conservative colleagues and their media friends for giving too much away to his coalition partner, the Social Democrats, in the three months following the quick elections that made his Christian Democrats the largest party in the Bundestag.
And before he had stepped into the chancellery! It is unclear if the dissidents were Social Democrats, Christian Democrats, or both. They were labelled traitors by some. There is little doubt that the incoming administration will begin with much mistrust among its citizens. Unfortunately, Berlin and Brussels have high hopes Merz would boost the economy, get Europe back on track, and fix the faltering French-German engine.
