At least 15 people were killed and 18 others injured on Wednesday after a streetcar derailed in Lisbon, Portugal, in one of the city’s deadliest transport accidents in recent years. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences to the victims’ families and all those affected by the tragedy.
The yellow-and-white streetcar, known for carrying passengers up and down Lisbon’s steep hills, toppled onto its side on a narrow road during the evening rush hour at around 6 p.m. Television footage showed the vehicle badly crumpled, with its sides and roof heavily damaged. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, where dozens of responders worked to rescue passengers and provide medical assistance.
The exact cause of the derailment remains unclear, though local media reported that an investigation is already underway. Authorities are examining whether a mechanical fault or human error may have been responsible. The accident has shocked Portugal, raising questions about safety standards on Lisbon’s iconic but aging streetcar network.
