As an aviation safety advocate, she is a sought-after speaker, invited to key international forums to share her insights on aviation, leadership, and beyond. In addition, Aisha serves as a Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), and the 99s Woman in aviation Session Africa, reflecting her impact on a global scale. Beyond her expertise in the aviation landscape, she is an acclaimed voice for empowering women in the sector. As we dive deep into her journey, Aisha Jibreel Alexander’s leadership vision for growth and evolution is truly inspirational.
The Beginning
Born in Medellín, Colombia, Aisha has dedicated her professional life to aviation, safety, and leadership across international platforms. After qualifying as a pilot, she built her career in the Middle East, flying for Etihad Airways, a leading global airline. This experience advanced her flying career, shaping her vision of safety as the cornerstone of sustainable aviation.
With a dual Master’s degree in Aviation Safety and Human Factors from Emirates Aviation University (UAE) in partnership with Coventry University (UK), Aisha is currently preparing to continue her research journey by pursuing a PhD in Human Factors, reflecting her relentless efforts to advance aviation safety through both practice and scholarship. Apart from being an FAA-recognized and GCC Commercial Pilot, she is a strong advocate for aviation safety and women’s empowerment.
Major Breakthrough in the Field
Aisha’s work and commendable contributions have been recognized in the global aviation sector. In 2013, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) acknowledged her achievements in education and safety records, while in 2021, she was honored with the AeroTime Global Award for her influence in aviation and advocacy for women in the field. That same year, she was appointed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as Safety Secretary for the North American Region, a role that helped her contribute to shaping international safety policies and cross-border collaboration.
Beyond the airlines, Aisha also offered her expertise as the Director of Safety for the Coca-Cola Aviation Department, applying human factors and safety management systems to corporate aviation operations. These roles highlighted the importance of adapting safety practices across diverse sectors of aviation.
As a sought-after speaker, Aisha has been invited to key international forums, including as a speaker at the Dubai Airshow conference in 2017, a contributor at the Aviation Summit in 2018, and a speaker at the IAMC International Aviation Management Conference in 2022. Each of these platforms has allowed her to advance the conversation on aviation safety, diversity, and leadership — helping leaders gain insights from an industry expert.
Fostering Women’s Empowerment in Aviation
Promoting women in aviation has been central to Aisha’s mission. Having worked with the Ninety-Nines (99s) Women in Aviation, first with the Arabia Section and currently, with the African Section, her journey has constantly demonstrated supporting mentorship and representation. She comments, “My ambition is to continue advancing aviation safety, contribute to global research in human factors, and inspire new generations—especially women—to pursue careers in aviation with confidence, resilience, and vision.”
Navigating the Dynamic Landscape
Challenges are an inevitable part of every professional journey, and Aisha is not an exception to this. Despite the challenging phases, resilience has been a defining theme throughout her journey. She reflects, “As a single mother, I have balanced the demands of a global aviation career and advanced education with raising my son. In this mission, I was strongly supported by my own mother, who passed on to me a legacy of academic discipline and family values that continue to guide both my professional and personal life.”
With a positive attitude, encouragement to others, and her determination in never taking “no” as an answer, she led to the creation of her professional brand, “Aishathepilot,” which has soon turned into a symbol of resilience, advocacy, and inspiration.
Aisha’s memoir, “From Ashes: The Ascent to Save Icarus, ” a reflection of not only her journey as a pilot and safety leader, but also her dedication to resilience, advocacy, and inspiration for future generations, will soon be published worldwide.
