Six of the seven G7 nations opposed the United States’ decision to lift oil sanctions against Russia, according to German Chancellor Frederich Merz on Friday. The action was taken by US President Donald Trump to increase global supply in the face of skyrocketing prices following the US-Israeli war against Iran on February 28.
The leaders of Norway, Canada, and Germany—all NATO members—said they will try to persuade Trump to reconsider his mind by using established channels of communication with the White House.
The three reaffirmed the alliance’s position that the Kremlin still needs to face the greatest amount of pressure due to its war in Ukraine and its broader danger to international security.According to Merz, “six out of seven were clearly of the opinion that we should not release the sanctions against Russia.
The White House’s action was applauded by the Kremlin, which said that Russian and US interests are similar. “We interpret US moves as an effort to stabilize the energy markets. Our interests coincide in this regard,” stated Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian president. US representatives have stated that this exception has been made for oil that was loaded prior to March 12th.” Peskov stated.
