It is unusual for a thousand-word social media message from a US tech corporation to go viral. However, Palantir’s piece, which is essentially a 22-point manifesto, currently has over 30 million views on X.
It is the brainchild of the controversial company’s co-founder and CEO, who has criticized the idea that all cultures are equal and advocated for universal national service. Alex Karp also labeled Germany and Japan’s post-World War II disarmament a “overcorrection,” defended AI weaponry, and decried “ruthless exposure” of public people’ private lives.
Karp’s opinions are important because his company’s growing portfolio of UK government contracts includes the NHS, the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the Financial Conduct Authority, and 11 police forces.
Not to mention its multimillion-dollar transactions with the United States and other powerful states. Some are concerned about the firm’s leaders’ influence and attitudes as it becomes more involved in public entities.Prof Shannon Vallor, chair of data ethics and AI at Edinburgh University, told the BBC that every alarm bell for democracy should ring.
