Belgian PM De Wever: Europe Must Reach a Compromise with Russia to End the Ukraine War

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever says Europe must negotiate with Russia to stop the war in Ukraine and restore inexpensive energy supply, as EU leaders disagree on engaging Moscow. De Wever emphasized that a negotiated settlement is also required to restore access to low-cost electricity.

The European Union remains divided on this topic. French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán have all advocated for direct talks with Moscow, while Poland and the three Baltic states are strongly opposed.

In confidence, European leaders agree with me, but no one dares to say it outright. “We must end the war in the interest of Europe, without being naive toward Putin,” De Wever stated. The speaker emphasized the importance of rearming and deploying soldiers to Europe’s eastern borders to avoid repeating past mistakes in relations with Russia. At the same time, we need to normalize relations with Russia and restore access to cheap energy.

That is common sense, De Wever explained. The Prime Minister stated that Europe’s dual approach of militarily supporting Ukraine while punishing Russia’s economy has become unworkable in the absence of US support.
