According to authorities, four more people have died in Kenya as a result of severe flooding brought on by heavy rain, bringing the total number of fatalities in the last week to at least 66. Heavier rain fell on Nairobi, the capital, overnight, but no further fatalities were reported.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, two children were saved from a flooded house, and 11 people were rescued after a minibus, known locally as a matatu, became stuck as water rose in Nairobi. Last week’s heavy rains have caused rivers to overflow their banks, resulting in flash floods that have damaged roads, power and water lines, and flooded homes.
Nairobi’s bridges were destroyed, causing several highways to be closed, while Saturday’s rain caused some schools to flood. The interior ministry issued a warning on Sunday that heavy rains were still occurring in some areas of the nation, raising the possibility of floods.
Over 2,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in search of safety, and authorities have advised residents in low-lying areas to relocate to safer ground. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, according to the police, in response to the “torrential rain and subsequent devastating flooding affecting various parts of the country.
