Nine People Were Slain in Turkey’s Second School Shooting in Two Days

Interior Minister Mustafa Cifci has confirmed that a shooting at a school in southern Turkey killed at least eight kids and one teacher, and injured several others. The incident occurred at Ayser Calik Secondary School in the Kahramanmaras district. Local governor Mukerren Unluer confirmed that the attacker was also slain in the incident.

It comes a day after 16 people were injured when an ex-student opened fire at another high school in the south of the country before committing suicide. Ciftci reported that 13 persons were injured, with six in critical condition.

The motivation for Wednesday’s attack is unknown, and an inquiry has been initiated. According to Turkish media, the attacker, thought to be a teenager, entered two classrooms carrying five pistols and seven magazines, which Unluer said belonged to his father, an ex-police officer.

Police have detained the attacker’s father, according to local media. People seemed to jump from the school’s first-floor windows and flee the premises, according to video authenticated by the BBC. The sound of gunfire was very intense,” a reporter for Turkish television NTV reported, adding that “there was panic in front of the school.
