A senior Foreign Office Official will Resign Over the Mandelson Screening Controversy

After his department neglected to notify the prime minister that Lord Mandelson had failed security screening for the US ambassadorship, the top civil servant in the Foreign Office is resigning.

According to the BBC, Sir Olly Robbins has essentially been fired because Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Sir Keir Starmer no longer have faith in him. It follows the government’s confirmation that the Foreign Office disregarded the screening agency’s recommendation and let Lord Mandelson to assume the position.

According to a spokeswoman, until earlier this week, neither Sir Keir nor any minister knew that Lord Mandelson had failed the vetting process. Prior to thorough screening, Lord Mandelson was named the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States in December 2024. He officially assumed the position on February 10, 2025.

His connections to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein led to his dismissal just seven months later.Allegations that Sir Keir deceived Parliament and MPs by claiming that “full due process” was followed during the appointment have prompted calls for his resignation.
