The Pentagon revealed on Wednesday that US Navy Secretary John Phelan is leaving the Trump administration. In a social media statement, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated that his retirement will be “effective immediately”.
Parnell also stated that Hung Cao, the Navy Undersecretary, will take over as acting secretary. Phelan is the most recent senior military figure to depart the administration in recent months. His resignation coincides with the ongoing US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the US-Israel war with Iran.”We thank Secretary Phelan for his service to the Department and the United States Navy on behalf of the Secretary of War and Deputy Secretary of War, and we wish him well in his future endeavors,” Parnell wrote.
Phelan’s departure was not explained by the Navy. Only a few weeks have passed since US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth requested that Army Chief of Staff Randy George resign. Recently, Gen. David Hodne and Maj. Gen. William Green, two more army officials, were also dismissed.
