Iran’s War Ignites Push to Change Syria into a Global Energy Corridor

Amid massive geopolitical developments caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a memo attributed to Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Syria, describes an ambitious plan to reposition Syria as a crucial transit hub for global energy flows.

The strategy focuses not on road transport, but on revitalizing and developing a vast network of current and projected pipelines that connect Gulf and Iraqi oil fields to Mediterranean ports and, eventually, European markets.

Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former rebel commander until recently, told the Antalya diplomacy forum in Turkey this week that the country’s geographic location allows it to serve as an alternative route for energy and commerce.

The Syrian leader stated that his country intends to act as a safe gateway for major routes between the East and West, providing access to the Mediterranean Sea and connecting the Gulf and Turkey via Jordan.

Sarkis Kassarjian, a journalist who focuses on Turkey and the Middle East, criticized the proposal as a repackaging of long-held notions. He told Euronews that the concept was “not new,” pointing out that plans to turn Syria into an energy transit route went back to the early 2000s.
