To counter “industrial-scale campaigns” by foreign entities to steal technological advancements, the White House has announced it will collaborate more closely with US artificial intelligence (AI) companies.
In an internal memo, Director of Science and Technology Policy Michael Kratsios stated that the government had fresh information showing “foreign entities, principally based in China” were taking advantage of American businesses. According to him, these companies are simply replicating AI technology created by US companies through a process known as “distilling”.
Its development is “the result of its own dedication and effort as well as international cooperation,” according to a spokesperson of China’s US embassy in Washington, DC. According to Kratsios, the goal was to “systematically undermine American research and development and access proprietary information” in the memo.
Beyond the document, a White House official declined to comment. In reaction to the document, a spokesperson of China’s US embassy in Washington, DC, expressed disapproval of “the unjustified suppression of Chinese companies by the US.” The spokesman continued, “China is not only the world’s factory but is also evolving into the world’s innovation lab.
