We are not merely a story. “We’re not just headlines; we’re people with families, lives, and people waiting for us at home,” said a sobbing Jake Rosmarin. For the American travel blogger on board the luxury cruise liner MV Hondius in the Atlantic Ocean, a fantasy trip has turned deadly.
He is one of approximately 150 individuals from 23 nationalities aboard the yacht, which is stuck near Cape Verde off Africa’s west coast. Three confirmed and five suspected instances of hantavirus, a rare but dangerous disease spread primarily by rats, have now been detected.
Three passengers have died on the ship, and dozens others are ill or exhibiting symptoms since the MV Hondius set sail from Argentina about a month ago. Health officials are currently working to examine samples from passengers, and the World Health Organization (WHO) believes it may have spread among people on board. Following Cape Verdean officials’ refusal to grant clearance earlier this week, Spain stated that the ship might sail to the islands, where people on board would be treated and deported.
