Sylvain Zurcher: Transforming Maritime Infrastructure with Sustainable Solutions

Sylvain Zurcher

We recently had the privilege of having an insightful conversation with Sylvain Zurcher, a passionate serial entrepreneur and board executive specializing in energy transition, maritime decarbonisation, and sustainable infrastructure. As the founder of METHANAVE, and Global Ethanol Association, he is reshaping the maritime industry with innovative energy solutions. By blending global finance experience with an emphasis on building future-ready businesses, Sylvain Zurcher is an instrumental figure in driving sustainability across industries.

The Beginning

Sylvain Zurcher’s career began in international finance, where he worked in wealth management and capital markets for over 25 years. This provided him a strong foundation in investment strategy, risk management, and understanding the complex needs of privately owned companies and wealthy individuals and families internationally. His strong academic background, including a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus on Banking & Finance, Risk Management, and Commodity Trading has played an important role in shaping this path. Over the years, he has continued to complement his experience with professional certifications and executive education programs in areas such as sustainable investing, infrastructure and project finance, private markets, and board governance.

With increasing interest in infrastructure and the global energy transition, he realized that many technologies capable of reducing emissions already exist, but scaling them requires strong collaboration across industries and new commercial frameworks. At the same time, Sylvain increasingly felt the desire to work on initiatives where he could have a more direct and meaningful impact, contributing to concrete solutions with a clear purpose. “This realization led me to move from finance into entrepreneurship. I founded METHANAVE in Switzerland, a company focused on supporting the transformation of maritime transport and related industries through partnerships, infrastructure development, and pioneering solutions,” he reflects.

In parallel, Sylvain co-founded the Global Ethanol Association, where he currently serves as President of the Board. The association works with international stakeholders to support the development of sustainable ethanol solutions across various industries and promotes cross-sector collaboration, including initiatives in maritime transport and aviation.

Sylvain adds, “My work today sits at the intersection of industry, infrastructure, and global cooperation, helping develop practical pathways for large-scale decarbonisation. Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, I continue to push myself to innovate, explore new ideas, and look beyond traditional industry boundaries, as this mindset has been an important driver of my professional evolution.”

Spark Behind the Creation of METHANAVE

The idea behind METHANAVE came from observing how fragmented the transition toward more sustainable maritime transport and energy systems can be.

Shipping is a truly global industry,” Sylvain shares, “involving complex supply chains, regulatory frameworks, infrastructure requirements, and a wide range of stakeholders. For new solutions to scale effectively, strong coordination is needed. From the beginning, the ambition was not only to participate in this transition, but to help unlock breakthrough advancements by connecting the different parts of the ecosystem and enabling practical solutions to emerge.”

METHANAVE initially started with paid consultancy agreements, helping industry participants better understand emerging market opportunities and navigate the evolving landscape of maritime energy transition. Through these early engagements, it became clear to Sylvain that beyond advisory, there was a strong need to facilitate structured market access, strategic partnerships, and reliable supply frameworks across borders.

Over time, his vision evolved from consultancy to a broader commercial role, focused on helping create the conditions that enable innovative maritime solutions and new industry models to scale internationally.

Core Services at the Organizations

Sylvain’s activities are structured around two complementary organisations with different roles. METHANAVE is a Swiss-based commercial company specialising in the maritime energy transition. Its value proposition is built on facilitating structured and reliable supply through integrated downstream sales activities, supported by strategic partnerships and a global network. METHANAVE also operates in areas such as ship brokerage and project management for next-generation vessels, particularly innovative ships capable of operating on alternative propulsion systems. Through these activities, the company contributes to the adoption of more flexible and lower-emission maritime technologies.

In parallel, the Global Ethanol Association is a Swiss-based not-for-profit organisation that brings together stakeholders from across the ethanol value chain. The association aims to foster collaboration, share knowledge, and support the development of practical initiatives that can accelerate the adoption of sustainable ethanol-based solutions.

Sylvain mentions, “Within the association, two sector-focused programs have been launched so far for Maritime and Aviation. These groups are designed as collaborative platforms for members (and future members) to explore concrete applications and industry initiatives. As these projects involve multiple stakeholders and are conducted within a confidential framework for members, the details are not publicly disclosed.

However, the initiatives currently being explored broadly include areas such as maritime transport, port and logistics infrastructure, energy applications for power generation, and international cooperation projects aimed at supporting lower-emission industrial and transport systems.

What is particularly encouraging is the level of engagement from industry stakeholders. It shows that the transition toward more sustainable transport and energy systems is increasingly being driven by collaboration across sectors and regions.”

Staying Ahead of the Curve

An efficient leader keeps a business fresh, innovative, and in step with the latest industry trends and technologies. For Sylvain, the energy transition is one of the most dynamic areas of global industry today, and innovation is happening simultaneously across technology, policy, infrastructure, and finance.

He believes a key part of staying ahead is maintaining close relationships with stakeholders across the ecosystem. Through METHANAVE and his role within the Global Ethanol Association, Sylvain regularly engages with industry leaders, policymakers, technology developers, and investors from different regions.

Another important factor is combining technical innovation with strong commercial and financial structuring. My background in finance allows me to focus on how projects can become viable and scalable from an investment perspective.

Ultimately, innovation in this field often comes from connecting different industries and creating new forms of collaboration,” Sylvain states.

Words of Wisdom for Beginners

Sharing his insights with the aspiring professionals, Sylvain mentions, “One of the most important lessons I have learned is that large transformations rarely happen through a single company or technology. They happen through ecosystems of collaboration.

For entrepreneurs entering sectors such as sustainable transport and energy infrastructure, it is essential to build strong networks and partnerships. The ability to bring together different stakeholders often matters just as much as the innovation itself.

Another key lesson is to stay focused on long-term impact. Many of the challenges we face today, such as climate change, energy security, and sustainable transport, require solutions that will evolve over decades. Entrepreneurs who combine vision, patience, and strong execution can play an important role in shaping these transformations.

Finally, I believe resilience is one of the most important qualities for any entrepreneur. As Confucius suggested, greatness is not defined by the absence of failure, but by the ability to continue moving forward despite it. When working on long-term transformations such as the energy transition, challenges are inevitable, but perseverance and the willingness to learn from setbacks are often what ultimately lead to meaningful progress.”
